The Unusual Ariel School Incident (What did 62 schoolchildren in rural Zimbabwe really see that day?)
Picture this: its 1994 and you're just a child attending a small private school in the rural town of Ruwa, Zimbabwe. Its mid-morning, around 10 a.m., and you, along with 61 other kids, have just been let out for break. But as you and your friends play, you suddenly see something impossible...
Africa is not known for its UFO sightings. Most reports tend to come from the US and alien sightings often feel like a largely Western phenomenon. But, for a few days in 1994 it seemed that whatever these things were had finally turned their attention to Africa.
Sightings Across Africa
Alien sightings were reported across Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia. In the days preceding the Ariel School Incident, there had been numerous claims of fiery balls of light passing through the night sky. A woman in Zimbabwe reported seeing a mysterious glowing light hovering over her chicken coop and a trucker claimed to have seen a being next to a patch of rural road. Most of this was chalked up to either a meteor or comet. While sceptic Brian Dunning explained it as the re-entry of the Zenit-2 rocket from the Cosmos 2290 satellite launch. Which left burning streaks that moved silently across the night sky as the booster broke apart.
The Day of The Sighting
These sightings seemingly came to a head on September 16, 1994, when children at Ariel School-ranging in age from 6 to 12-claimed to have witnessed a mysterious craft lingering in the sky just outside their school.
Reports vary. Some children claimed to have seen multiple objects, while others insisted there was only one. However, what remains consistent, is the overall description of the craft. It was described as a white oblong disc, like a typical flying saucer but with a bright golden halo or glow around it. Which was so bright, that it hurt some children's eyes. The craft appeared to blink in and out of sight, almost as if it were teleporting, gradually moving closer before landing on a scrubby patch of field just beyond the playground.
As it landed, the children reported feeling a strong gust of wind, followed by a soft whirring sound and flashes of light in the surrounding trees. As they stared, dark, shadowy figures began emerging from the craft.
These beings were described as short, around 4 feet tall, with distorted humanoid features. Like large black eyes, pale skin and thin, slit like mouths. They wore dark, skintight jumpsuits. Many of the younger children fled in fear but a few of the older children remained. Maybe out of curiosity or simply frozen in fear. Those who stayed claimed that the beings began communicating with them telepathically, projecting thoughts directly into their minds.
Their message was unsettling: warnings about pollution, the dangers of unchecked technological advancement, and the possibility of humanity destroying the planet.
The beings warned about pollution, the dangers of unchecked technological advancements and how the world could end because humans were killing the planet.
The entire encounter lasted no more than 15 minutes. The beings eventually returned to their craft, which then lifted off and disappeared into the sky, leaving the children shaken. Soon after, the school bell rang, and life appeared to resume as normal and the children returned to class.
Of course, when the students told their teachers about this sighting, they were brushed off almost immediately. It was just chalked up to a wild imagination or simple prank. Though later that evening, news eventually reaches the parents. Who quickly bombard the school with questions and demands about these supposed aliens.
The headmaster, Colin Mackie, was himself not quite sure what to make of all this. He, like most of the adults, was sceptical about the claims, but also intrigued by them. He, just like the parents, noted that most of the accounts from the children were consistent, and that they seemed genuinely shaken up by this encounter. Not something you'd expect from a story made up by some children.
This sighting occurred on a Friday, and it spread rapidly. By the weekend it had garnered the attention of ZBC radio, who reported on the event. This coverage brought the incident to the attention of Cynthia Hind, a local UFO researcher already investigating other sightings in the area. In the coming days, weeks and months three main investigators would come to the forefront of this investigation. Each bringing a unique perspective and methodology with them.
Tim Leach, a corresponded for BBC in Zimbabwe would be the first to actually question the children, coming to the school on the Monday after the incident. Leach was a seasoned journalist and had experience as a war correspondent. For some reason though, something about the Ariel school incident had unsettled him. The disturbing nature of the accounts, the consistency in testimony, and the emotional impact on the children all lent credibility to their claims. One girl, named Lisil, even expressed fear that the beings might return to kill them.
Cynthia Hind soon took a leading role in the investigation. She was one of the first to ask the children to draw what they had seen and the results were strikingly consistent, with many drawing flying saucers with domed tops and lights, along with mysterious figures clad in black emerging from it. One of the drawings even depict a group of children crying while looking at the beings.
Hind also noted that the children would interpret the sightings differently depending on their cultural background. With some identifying the entities as tokoloshe, rather than alien beings. It’s also important to note that many of these children grew up in a rural farming community with limited exposure to Western media.
The final investigator would be professor of psychiatry John. E. Mack, who would only arrive in November. He took a slightly different approach than the previous two. He would question them individually with a focus on minimising suggestion and encouraging authentic recall. It was also during these interviews where the telepathic communication statements came more into focus, as this wasn't something that had been mentioned to either Leach or Hind before. Though some sceptics argue this was in part influenced by Mack's own prominent environmental views.
Regardless, all three investigators reached a similar conclusion: they truly believed the children had in fact seen something on that Friday, even if they could not find a full logical explanation for it. Of course there are theories attempting to explain the sightings, and they range from mass hysteria, simple misidentification and even an elaborate prank.
The most popular one is the mass hysteria theory. Explaining it away as a simple shared delusion seen by a large group of people. Mass hysteria is typically brought on by a period of great stress, perceived danger or great excitement. Though people experiencing mass hysteria often have physical symptoms as well. Such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and fainting. Something that wasn't present in the children of Arial school. additionally, the children, also did not have much exposure to UFO's or popular depictions of aliens in media before this. They also all weren’t going through a massively stressful event at the time either. So, while this explanation seems the most logical, even it has holes.
The second most popular theory is simple misidentification. Explaining that the children had just seen a harrier jet, or even weather balloon, something that was common back in Zimbabwe. Though this also does not explain the telepathic message the children had received, the beings they saw or the unusual movement of the craft.
The final theory suggests it was a prank that spiralled out of control. This theory seemingly does hold some water at first but comes with its own complications. One witness, a boy identified as Dallyn, would later be re-interviewed in 2023 for Vice. He recounted his story, claiming that he had pointed to a shiny rock in the bush and jokingly convinced others it was a spaceship. He apparently did this all as a prank to get out of school, but that it all got out of hand.
But it seems Dallyn is a bit inconsistent with his recollection of events. As his newest account directly contradicts an earlier more detailed interview he did in 2008 with Randall Nickerson. Where he explained in detail what the lights on the flying saucer looked like. It’s also worth noting that his confession directly conflicts with the numerous, consistent statements made by all the other students throughout the years.
As recently as 2023, some of the children from the Ariel school had been reinterviewed as adults. Eerily, most of their story has once again remained consistent, with only slight changes over the years in descriptions. Many express that the sighting had traumatized them. They express fear or anxiety over whether the beings will return someday and some have made art based on their encounter. Some students also experience a heightened sense of environmental responsibility, or fear over the state of the environment. Seemingly heeding the alien's messages.
To this day, the Ariel school incident stands as one of the most well documented and compelling UFO sightings to date. With many of the children's underexposure to common UFO tropes or media standing at the forefront of its credibility.
I myself am a sceptic, and throughout the years of hearing tales about ghosts, alien encounters and mysterious creatures, the Ariel School encounter kind of stands out as being one of the most honest, well documented cases of alien sightings in recent years.
Unlike other people who have been interviewed regarding their own alien encounters, the children seemed truly upset and shaken by the encounter. Not to mention the eerie consistency in their descriptions as well as their ability to basically describe the same thing in different wordings. I also found it very interesting that some interpreted the sighting as being tokoloshe or some kind of ancestor spirit, rather than just jumping to the conclusion of it being aliens.
